Proclaiming the “Good News”

The Passion

Many Christians with creative talents feel guided to use their artistic gifts to reach others with the message of Jesus Christ.  If you’ve never used your art to reach others with the message of Jesus, or you’re just starting out (or you’ve been doing it for a while, but you’re still a bit confused by it), you might have some questions on how to do it.  In this journal we will discuss one such way.

Focus on Your Message

The first place to start is to remember that art has a way of communicating with people.  You’re saying something - be it indirectly with just an image, or directly with literature.  The first step when you start creating your art, is to always remember that you have to create your art in such a way that your message is clear to everyone who might come across it.  Make sure this message comes across, if you want it to have an impact on those who might see it.  If your medium makes this a bit difficult, you can explain the message of your art more clearly in the comments section.  Use this area to bring clarity if you feel your art might possibly be a bit vague.  Either way, if you want to share Jesus through your art, your art must always have a clear message, whether spoken or unspoken.  Remember that you are always saying something.

Now you might be thinking, “But what is my message?”

The Actual Message

I’ve found that the best place to start (and linger on for as long as you feel to) is with the simple message of Jesus Christ.  When you’re dealing with people who do not know God, a good place to start is with the “Gospel of Jesus Christ”.  This might sound vague, but it’s very specific when you find out what the word “gospel” means.  The word “Gospel” actually originates from the meaning of the New Testament Greek word evangelion, meaning "good news".  So when I say the “Gospel of Jesus Christ”, I’m actually saying the “Good News of Jesus Christ”.    So share the Good News of what Jesus Christ did for us through your art.  The Good News, my Christian brothers and sisters, is the following:

:bulletyellow: Jesus died for our sins

By accepting Jesus into your life, you are forgiven of every wrong thing you ever did, or even thought.

“Now, brothers and sisters, I want you to remember the Good News I told you …  that Christ died for our sins”  1 Cor 15:1-3

:bulletyellow: Through Jesus you have eternal life

“that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” John 3:15

“And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” John 17:3

:bulletyellow: That God loves you.  Unconditionally.

“I have loved you with an everlasting love” Jeremiah 31:3

“God has shown His love to us by sending His only Son into the world. God did this so we might have life through Christ.  This is love! It is not that we loved God but that He loved us. For God sent His Son to pay for our sins with His own blood.” 1 John 4:9-10

:bulletyellow: God is not angry with you

When dealing with people who haven’t accepted God yet, you will realize that some of them are so deep in their sin that they believe God will never accept them and never forgive them.  This is not true, as Jesus came to save us all.  Jesus actually spent quite a lot of time with people who were sinners - people who needed Him.

‘While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him.  When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”’ Mark 2:15-17

Basically, when you’re reaching out to others to accept Christ into their lives, always focus on the Good News of Jesus Christ.  Some might be tempted to share art that tells unsaved people how sinful and wrong they are.  Don’t do this.  Remember that these people are still sinners and that they will then surely have sin in their lives.  You are dealing with people who haven’t yet given their lives to God, so this is to be expected.  Also remember that, even if we have accepted Jesus Christ into our lives, we are also still sinners.  We all sin – let’s be kind-hearted towards each other.  When Jesus gave the Great Commission to His disciples, He said the following:

“And He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel (the good news) to every creature’.”  Mark 16:15

So this is what we must focus on when dealing with people who haven’t accepted Jesus Christ – tell them the Good News.  Tell them there’s a way out, that Jesus paid the price for them, that He has wonderful things planned for them – if only they accept Him.  Encourage them to accept Jesus as their personal Saviour.  Our goal is to get people saved.

There will be times when you feel guided to talk to someone about their sins.  Be obedient to this call, but act on it carefully and with delicacy, always remembering to tell them that Jesus Christ can help them overcome the sin in their lives.  In Ephesians 4:2 we are told to be “completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” – always remember this when dealing with others.  We are here to encourage and guide one another, in the direction of a loving Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Share your Thoughts

We will be launching a series of journals relating to online evangelism, and the struggles you as Christians face here on DA.  If you have any questions, or topics you would like to see a journal on, please let us know in the comments section.

Please share your own experiences with us as we would love to hear from you, and how you reached others with the Good News of Jesus Christ.

With Love,
The christians Team
