Congratulations again to our Resurrection Sunday Contest Winner :icongeorgiedeeart: for your winning entry His Sacrifice by GeorgieDeeArt

Thank you so much for taking the time to participate in this interview. We are excited to have you.  :aww:  Please explain your creative process for your winning entry.

The Gospel message entails both death and life. The contest theme “What Jesus' Sacrifice on the Cross Means to Me” seemed to focus more on the death of Christ. However you can’t really have one without the other.

For this piece I re-appropriated an abstract self-portrait I created for assessment a few years ago. The red was initially unintentional (or without reason other than visual aesthetic), but for this it worked well to represent Christ’s blood. The white wash over this represents the life side of the Gospel (and God making us white as snow).

To turn the acrylic painting into a vector, I took a photo and rendered the bitmap through CorelDRAW to receive multiple layers in vector. I then proceeded to start a layout design in Photoshop.

In some of my practice I have begun work that references symbols and imagery from different times and cultures in the church and bringing them together into one contemporary visual. Following this theme, I was reminded of the traditional piece by Spanish Francisco de Zurbarán from the middle ages of the Sacrificial Lamb, Lamb of God (Agnus Dei). So I redrew this icon into my own style, keeping a basic outline. Rendered this into a vector, then eventually added the text and halo.

I currently am very intrigued in simple aesthetics, and also due to the detail of the background, I kept the layout clean and simple, following a similar design principles one might have for a poster or album cover.

What is your workspace like?

Non-existent. Lol. I managed to recently get a medium sized painting produced on the floor of our family home entrance because that’s the biggest space to work. But really, anything bigger is not possible. There’s no space here, which is why I resort to so much digital and photographic mediums. So for that, it’s just me at my laptop on a very overcrowded desk, in a very overcrowded bedroom.

When I was at university, in my final year I had a study room-sized studio space where I could spread out paintings across the walls, desks, floors and easels to work out. Heck even on the window sill, ha!

If you could hang out with one person, living or dead, who would it be? What would you do?

Probably Deborah from Judges. There is little information about her but she has a really admirable CV, lol. I would like be an assistant for her to see just how she judged and counseled all those people, plus lead into a war. That’s no.1 human resources skills there. Very inspiring.

Where do you find inspiration?

Depends on the subject. For my religious based artwork, the foremost inspiration is God/The Word. Secondly comes from Orthodox, Catholic and Lutheran Reformation art styles and theology. And after that comes design principles, contemporary mediums and techniques, popular culture, political commentary, etc. and various other personal influences and knowledge.

I am online nearly every day, browsing through the likes of DeviantArt, Flickr and Instagram. So subconsciously (and sometimes very deliberately) I am consuming into my art mind what I come across on those platforms.

Isaiah 43: 18-21 by GeorgieDeeArt

What is your favorite Bible story?

Not sure if it’s my favourite but stories like these give me a little giggle,
“ The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight 19 and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” 20 His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. 21 But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” 22 (His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus[b] to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.) 23 Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
24 So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” 25 He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” 26 They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?””
That sass tho.

King by GeorgieDeeArt

If you could ask God one question and receive a clear direct answer, what would it be?

I would probably ask something along the lines of what His entire image is and what the New Heavens/New Earth looks like.
The content of the answer would require the entire heavens to engulf me and blind my sinful eyes.

What is your greatest challenge and greatest benefit of being part of an online artist community?

Greatest challenge: The lack of want for professional development. This is a tough opinion I guess, but it would be great to see groups to be more educational and less accepting of mediocre art.

Greatest benefit: With your account, you can be the boss!

Your gallery is quite varied. Do you find yourself gravitating toward one category of art more than the rest?

Right now I don’t really. My qualifications is in contemporary art, which could cover many concepts and mediums. I have an upcoming debut solo exhibition which will be based on iconography found in the church from ancient Christianity to contemporary design. Merging the ancient, middle aged with the new; East vs. West. This will predominantly be paintings in various styles.

Do you have any words of encouragement for aspiring artists?

Don’t limit your curiosity and go and learn things, no matter how bizarre or useless it may seem.. Being educated about lots of different things will make you very aware of your surroundings better and can influence your art to a much higher conceptual standard.

Thank you
