Essentials of Christianity

Journal Entry: Sun Jun 3, 2007, 5:56 PM
Daily Word

“[Praise to God for a Living Hope] Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” 1 Peter 1:3 (NIV)

[ Biblegateway ]

What Are The Essentials?

The Essentials of Christianity

Essential Christianity. We hear a lot of discussion about essentials and non-essentials, but what are the essentials of Christianity?

When we talk about the essentials of Christianity we're referring to the basic elements that make up and characterize our faith, and which, of course, separate it from other beliefs. Let's survey these doctrines.

First, we believe in the authority of Scripture, which is another way of saying that the Bible is God's inspired, infallible, and inerrant Word. It's the ultimate source for knowledge about God, as well as the definitive guide for our daily lives.

Next we affirm the existence of a triune God or one God in three distinct persons - the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This God is self-existent, eternal, unchanging, omnipotent, omnipresent, holy, righteous, and loving. God created the universe from nothing and He rules over His creation sovereignly including both human and angelic beings.

We also hold that man is a physical and spiritual being who is created in God's image. But because of his sin or transgression, man has lost his fellowship with God. The extent of sin is so great that its effects continue to this very day in the form of cruelty, suffering, and death.

By God's grace, Jesus Christ - Who is fully God and fully man - was sent to save us from our bondage to sin. We believe that Christ was born of a virgin, died for our sins, physically rose from the dead, and will one day return to judge the world and deliver His people. Faith in Christ is the only means by which mankind can escape eternal damnation and judgment.

Finally, we recognize the church as God's ordained institution headed by Christ. The church is composed of all believers, and is organized for worship, for fellowship, for the administration of the sacraments, for spiritual growth and support, and for evangelizing the world.

I just wanted to ask for a prayer request for my big brother Christopher who is in a hospital right now because of third degree burns on 18% percent of his body. I'd also like to ask for his spiritual growth and acceptance because he's already expressed more than once that he doesn't believe in God. I hope God shows him a miracle that can only be done by Him, so that Christopher might come to know Him.

Thank you to all my brothers and sisters in Christ :)
God bless!!

Dear Christian community,

I am currently ill with cancer in the left half of my brain. I am in the hospital, and will be for the next 6 weeks. I feel awful, and am treating the nurses and doctors poorly, which I feel awful for, too, and my parents are embaressed by this. The docotrs are biased on what cancer I have, also. Please, help the doctors determine the cancer, and help me be kinder and get out sooner.

Today, I learned that a sixteen year old girl, Emily, who I used to competitively swim with, died in a car accident this afternoon. I was middle school buddies with her brother and haven't really seen them in a long time, but I felt that I ought to send out this request for the family, especially for Emily's twin sister. Also pray for the 17 year old driver of the other car; I don't know his name, but I believe that he is still in the hospital. Please pray for his physical and emotional recovery after this tragedy. Thank you all so much!

Fellow brothers and sisters, I want to thank you for all of your prayers! God is giving us the opportunity to pay off our debts, and little by little, we're finally starting to make great progress. Hopefully we will soon be able to have at least an apartment of our own, Lord willing.

Our youth class is going very well, too. We have a fantastic group of young people with a lot of potential to serve the church, and I am so excited for them!

Thanks again for all of your prayers, everyone!

I figure it's about time to send you guys some good news. :) My cousin, whom I asked you all to pray for awhile back, is doing much better. He's abandoned Wicca and returned to the Lord. He's going to a biker church. :XD: How cool is that?? He's met a wonderful young woman with two children from a previous, abusive relationship; I've never seen a more adorable couple than those two and he does so well with the kids. Though he's still struggling with his alcohol addiction, his change over the past few months has been nothing short of miraculous.

Thank you all for your prayers. I owe you so much.

I wanted to send in an update for a prayer request I had sent back in December about my grandpa and some issues he was having with his heart.

He wasn't able to get into the doctor's early, but it turns out he didn't need to have any procedure performed or surgery. Praise God! I believe he is taking medication now to help control his heart rate. Thank you for the prayers!

God bless,

~Sara

He was in the hospital for a few days and has to keep to a strict diet but he's perfectly healthy now!

I asked you all to pray for my dear freidn Carmen a while back. She had runway from God and her Christian friends and started to have relationships with girls and making bad choices. I am proud to say that though she is only a young christian again, she is falling in love with God, and actually sings for worship team at church,

Since last school year I've been having an issue with one of my fellow classmates. She hated my guts and made that extremely clear. But this week, I found out she turned to Christ, and a day later she apologises and we're getting along now great! Praise God for the wiork he's done in my classmate!

I have been going through a tough time lately with my grandfather now dying on hospice, and was struggling with my faith and religion. It wasn't until tonight when *crystalclearink wrote me a note that asked if I was deep into my faith, and when I replied telling her about my struggles (which I won't put all the details here), she replied with "I don't think it's unChristian-like, you're going to lose someone you obviously love more than anything if I were God I would never fault you."

I can't say enough in words how those words to me where spoken through her from God. That God does not fault me for the struggle I am going through right now and wants to help me. God has been helping me even throughout this struggle doing things for me, I have praised Him for it many times, but I was struggling with the knowledge that He wasn't going to save my grandfather this time.

Its once I can get past this knowledge that I won't struggle anymore, and with what this deviant told me tonight, it has helped me alot. Once reading those words, my mind and soul almost immediately became lighter and clearer, felt like that was God's answer and truth, that in my heart I have always known it, but with it spoken it is what God is telling me for sure.

I thank God for telling me that tonight. I thank ~crystalclearink for telling me. I know this will be the right answer for me and will help me a lot.

:icontinman-20-tinster: ~Tinman-20-Tinster

The other day we learned that my Papa's cancer is down to just 1 tumor, a very tiny one on his chest :D Why that makes me happy is because he went from having 6 months to live in Jan. and then now 8 months later he has almost faught the cancer again. He has a 3 month break from chemo and doctor visits now, a much need break for him. His birthday was on the 31st and he turned 78. He's strong as ever even in this battle and he has the best birthday gift from God :D I have no doubt the prayers and blessings from everybody around him and the family have been reaching God. I couldn't be more happy that God has helped my Papa fight this battle yet again

My friend came back from surgery, and she's doing great! She's never felt better before! Praise the Lord!

:iconcitysilence: ~citysilence

I just wanted to thank God for the blessing he gave me in the form of a friend. I've been feeling terribly alone lately, lost and just...really bad about myself, and I was praying for someone to come and just be there for me, cause I've never really had that before...

I was lucky enough to bump into someone in my school who turned out to be a fantastic Christian. Today we spent a few hours just talking, which is something I've almost never done, especially not about God. Praise be!

I HAVE A JOB! I prayed and prayed and finally was accepted somewhere. I work in the child care area at our Local YMCA. I have always wanted a job working with Children and I feel God has given me this job to help me build the skills I will need for a career (or whatever else God has planned for my life).

Hopefully this job will provide me with enough money to get a new car and maybe find a place of my own in a year or two... I am not sure what God has planned for my life but I am so thankful for this job! It's going great and I pray it stays this way!

-Emily

Thanks to all of you who prayed for my grandfather. He is doing much better now and is handling the chemo well. He has one round left, then they'll do surgery to remove any remaining tumors. He's responded very well to the treatment and it looks like he'll make a full recovery! Praise God!

:iconsongwriter20: ~Songwriter20

I suppose this is how I send you guys praises to post.

God has worked greatly through my life this year. With little things and big things, he was been there and showed me His great love and grace. He has touched my heart and my soul, and greatly blessed me. I went to a new school this year, and I didn't know anyone in my grade. I was always very scared, and I always prayed for a way through that and for friends. I look back now and see Him there, giving me so many friendships and letting me grow. So many prayers have been answered, and so many things have become clear to me.

Dear Christians,

Thank you so much for all your prayers...we just got word today that Stan Speck found a liver!! This was the last day he could find a liver before going into critical condition, and HE FOUND ONE! :) :) :) They already performed the transplant operation! :) :) :) He's in ICU right now and he's in pretty rough shape, but better shape than he would've been without one! Please continue to pray for his recovery and please continue to pray that THIS time his body does not try to reject the liver! THANK YOU SO MUCH! It was a miracle he found one so soon! :) :) :)

I just want to praise my Lord for touching the surgeon's hands, guiding him. He basically told my parents that it was one of the smoother surgeries he had done. I shook my head and laughed when I heard this (many days later, out of the anesthetic) and, even so, I had the surgery on Tuesday and I am hone today. That's four days post-op for all you nurses out there. Wonderful and speedy recovery is what I heard all over the HVSU. It is great to know such an awesome and masterful Father!

:icontinman-20-tinster: ~Tinman-20-Tinster

I would like to send out praise to God and his followers who have been praying and supporting my grandfather and the family. My grandfather wrote the doctor a note at the appt. last week, asking how much longer he had to live, and the doctor replied, "you have such a strong will to live. I give you another 6 months to a year, I have never seen somebody with such a strong will like this before" It's so awesome!!

He was given 6 months in Jan. and it is almost June, and yet through it all my grandfather has chanced his 6 months with many appts. and chemo and ER visits for emergencies, chanced it by eating ice cream from McD's though he shouldn't have with doctors orders, eating strawberries though he can't eat anything but ice chips, through everything he's living like he's never lived before and being risking, and the will to live is paying off.

The tumors are getting smaller, not gone of course, but they are getting smaller and the chemo is helping. The doctor was going to stop chemo last week, he's been having chemo everyweek for the last 8 weeks or more. Now the doctor okayed another 4 weeks of chemo and might do more after that!

Of course I praise God for all He is doing to help my grandfather live a little bit longer, stay a little bit healther, stay a little bit more stronger through it all, He is there thru the thick and bad and the good and He knows when it will be the right time for my grandfather to leave. It takes a strong man like my grandfather, and a strong woman like my grandmother to go through the last 4 years of this battle and God has been there helping them and I am ever more thankful for it. Thank you!

:icontinman-20-tinster: ~Tinman-20-Tinster

This previous Friday my parents were in a car accident coming home. Because of bad weather they went off the road and hit a tree really bad and they walked away with some bruised ribs and cartilage and some sore body parts while our car is wrecked, and I wanted to send out a praise and thank God that my parents weren't hurt worse and thank You for keeping them safe and allowing them to be with me still today. Also I would like to send out a praise and thank God for the nice people that stopped and called 911 and helped my parents out and didn't go on their way in the weather to get to their warm house while the bad weather continued on, I am thankful that God was calling out to them to help us as we would have helped them. Thank you for keeping my parents safe God and thank you for sending a few of your blessed angels to help my parents

Also I would like to send out a praise to God and say thank you for listening to my prayers and my friends prayers and family prayers and allowing my grandfather to heal from his surgery. He has been battling throat cancer for the last two years and it had came back this June and he underwent a 10 hour surgery in August to remove and replace his voicebox and rebuild most of his throat. There was a few times it was scary and he has to be rushed to the hospital 3-4 hours away but God was always there with his support and allowing friends and family to support me also and show me strength. When my grandfather got taken by helicopter one night back to the hospital from issues and had to stay 9 days in the hospital with infections in his throat, I thought it would be a long battle back and once again God came through and has answered my prayers and he is now without his feeding tube and can relearn how to eat, and he has started driving again, and he has the okay to relearn speech soon and he doesn't have to visit the doctors again for two months. I don't think any of this would have been so easy to deal with if I didn't have God's love and support and His answers to my prayers. I have to thank Him and all the friends and family that have been there for me and also thank all the medical staff and doctors at the hospital for allowing my grandfather to heal and battle this health issue. I praise God for all he has done to help us all pull through this situation. And thank You for the blessed souls that You have put in my life

:iconkeltick: ~KelticK :w00t: I got accepted to Ozark Christian College!!! I plan to get a Bachelor of Theology with a Missions major so I can go to Germany (or a German speaking country). Please pray that all goes well, because I may be accepted, but I've got 3 months til I have a diploma.

:icondemios: ~demios My friend actually drove out a demon with his youth group! They were singing and praising God when this one guy they knew who had been meddling with like... wicca and talking to demons and stuff came in and he was like... foaming at the mouth and muttering in a distorted voice. So the youth group prayed over him for about an hour... and eventually he stopped foaming and muttering and started praising God!

GOD MOVES!

:iconsolangefoxheart: ~SolangeFoxheart I had a friend, when I was young, who was somewhat violent and vulgar-ish, but the strangest thing happened- I, and a few of my close friends who weren't Christan or of any religion, were just standing around chatting when he suddenly said, in an ordering voice, out of nowhere, "Ask Jesus to forgive you of all your sins!" It came out of nowhere, and I did- one other person rolled their eyes but did so, and the other said his request out loud. It was strange- this aethist, cold, violent person saying it out of nowhere. He was sincere- and often, he's really not, but this time it was totally different. It still surprises me to this day, and I think it changed my perception on what God does, and how he moves through very... different people.

:iconthestargirl: ~thestargirl i dont know if you want to put this up but i feel for a few people hearing this would really help
until a few months ago I'd been a strong, devout christian, but then doubts had crept into my mind more and more until, when i got into an argument with my friend from church, i finally snapped and a switch flipped in me and i didn't belive in God... i just couldn't.... but every now and then i'd go along to my church to see all my friends even though it was really hard and very awkward for me...
but then last night i was thinking to myself... about why god tests people he knows aren't strong... and i ended up in a huge conversation with God in my head....
I've been struggling recently in college as all my friends have dropped out and i'm losing the battle with my weight, so i've lost all confidence in myself... and i asked God why couldn't he give me a break for just once "i already did, i let you grow strong for a while because of how brave and faithful you were before" but why can't you give me a longer break God? i'm not ready to be tested again..."this isn't a test, this is training for something more that i have planned for you, just keep going child, and get on with it"
and ever since the word "training" has stuck in my mind...
and since that the conversation continued about guys and whether the guy i'm involved with, is right for me...and god said "now is not the time for anyone" and i could see why and it felt right to me....
i hope this story can help someone... i get the feeling it might. I know it seems sometimes like God isn't real and like life is awful and you ask how he can do that to you.... but it's all part of something amazing God has planned for you.... what you belive is up to you, but i know i belive in God again.
God bless, Kat xxx

:iconripitupgenki: *ripitupgenki well i must say i have not had things as rough as some people but they were rather rough for me. as i grew up in a christian home i prayed every night for one thing. this one thing was to stop wetting the bed at night. no doctor could figure out why this was occuring, believe me my paretns tried everything. this went on for several years. after a time i drifted away form God thinking he did not care about me since after such a long time my alement had not been cured. i gave up on him and began to slip into the worlds ways. i hung out with the wrong crowd. tried smoking and vandalizing things, as well as stealing. about nineth grade i met up with my freind manda, she was a fellow writer and i reached out for help in improving my own stories. she introduced me to kristen who helped me with grammer and spelling. after awhile i became close to them both. one night i got talkign with kristen and soemthign just told me to trust her. i did i told her my story and why i stopped believing. she helped me realize i was wrong. during the time i lost my way i was cured of wetting the bed but i never attributed it to my previous prayers until kristen helped me see the truth. even after that i struggled with wantign to fit in and have lots of friends, be appriciated for my work. it was not until manda and kris both pushed me in my sernior year of highschool that i fully trusted God for the first ime in 8 years. ever since then i have been trying my hardest to become closer to God and know all of his thruths and promises. Praise the Lord that He saved me, along with everyone else.
