Description:

"A Dungeon horrible, on all sides round
As one great Furnace flam'd, yet from those flames
No light, but rather darkness visible
Serv'd only to discover sights of woe,
Regions of sorrow, doleful shades, where peace
And rest can never dwell, hope never comes
That comes to all; but torture without end
Still urges, and a fiery Deluge, fed
With ever-burning Sulphur unconsum'd:
Such place Eternal Justice had prepar'd
For those rebellious, here their Prison ordain'd
In utter darkness, and their portion set
As far remov'd from God and light of Heav'n
As from the Center thrice to th' utmost Pole.
O how unlike the place from whence they fell!"

"Paradise Lost"
John Milton (1608 - 1674)

* * * * *

"And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him."

Revelation 12:7-9

I didn't spent much time on the picture. It's more for the the quote, really.

I don't know where to start with this piece. First off the title, with its grave spelling errors,(intentional or unintentional) is an instant turn off. The text in the piece is half readable at best. The dragon in the picture is hardly representative of the Great Evil that is the devil and instead looks like a wayward pokemon caught in a particularly bad house fire. By your own admission you didnt spend much time on the image and you're just using it for a backdrop for the text which is unreadable, plus neither quote in your write up is represented by the image. The quote from Milton within the image has no mention of a dragon and the Biblical quote has the Dragon at war with angels. Therefore if the image doesn't reflect the text what then is the point of this piece?

What exactly were you trying to accomplish with the piece?
:iconjustin-case:
I can read the words quite well. And do you know what the dragon in Revelations looked like? Also, the dragon (aka Satan) was cast down, and the passage is probably referring to hell, which is where Satan is going to end up in the long run... so it makes sense. At least that's what I think.

While I don't know exactly what the Dragon looks like, I think perhaps he might look more like this.. [link] rather than this..[link] ...

..as for the text, try reading it about 2 feet away from your monitor with your eyes squinted and then see how much of it you can read. If the text is what this Deviant is trying to showcase then it should be as easy to read as possible. It's not.

well, if you're looking at a picture and trying to read... you wouldn't squint your eyes, now would you? :-P

Aye, I admit it. The text was a mistake. From my point of view from when I was making it, I could read it. I was thinking about when other people would be lookin' at it. Oops.
But, then again, Most of the meaning in the deviation I put into the comments, not the actual picture.

I didn't think I put Charizard into my picture. That's odd. ;p
:iconjf-kidd:
It's true that through an insular look at the deviation in all of its pieces, none of them really go together. But that's not how I wanted people to see it. I, more-or-less, meshed all the pieces together as best I could(?)-- Milton, the Bible and the image. I combined the two different quotes into a thought all on its own, rather than try to represent them independentally. So instead of thinking of how the image reflects either text seperately, image how it can reflect them as a combination.

I could've put this into the Artist's Comments but I didn't think of it at the time. Ere to the Paradise Lost quote that I've inserted, the story covers what the Bible goes over in Revelation 12:7-9; the war between God and Satan.

It's a small issue but the title has a simple explanation. deviantART doesn't allow enough room for the full thing. So I took literary licenses and played with it.

I'm sorry if my critique may have come off as too harsh so thank you for receiving it with grace. It's always important when creating an art piece with text that you remember that clarity is key. That's what the squinting eye trick is about, it helps you to determine if the text is readable by narrowing your vision making the dominant features of a piece reveal itself. Also remember that Art is a language unto itself. Every piece of art should "speak" for itself so that the meaning of a piece doesn't need explanation.
