Description:

This is a project I did in art class called batik. Batik is a wax-resist dyeing technique used on textile. Most often, I believe, a pattern rather than an image is used, but whatever. My artwork, I got a good grade. :p

For some reason I had Easter on my mind when I did this, even though it was well past Easter. I simply used obvious symbols that represent Christ.

Rose - He was as precious and as beautiful as a rose. One of my favorite songs by Michael W. Smith, "Above All" has part I absolutely love:
Rejected and alone
Like a rose
Trampled on the ground
You took the fall
And thought of me

Every time I see a rose, especially a red rose, I think of Jesus.

Cross - Most obvious one here. The cross is symbolic for not only Jesus' crucifixion but also the Christian faith. I added in all three, because I always remember how one of the criminals was saved.
"We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise." Luke 23:41-43
The dying criminal had more faith than the rest of Jesus' followers put together.

Bird - This is not a dove, it's just a white bird. Don't be confused. It's white symbolizing Christ's purity and being sinless. The bird in flight represents Jesus' ascension into heaven.
When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Luke 24:50-51

I'd like to add that this was a very different assignment for me. I'd never used the materials or techniques before, very noob I was. The ink and wax was a little difficult to control at times, which is why it's a bit sloppy. My teacher said I was supposed to put the black ink on the entire surface to give it a nice cracked look, but I felt around the edge was sufficient.

Also, I am donating this piece to my church. We recently added on two new classrooms and the preschool director says we need decorations. It's fairly large too, about 15" by 19". Not the biggest thing I've done, unfortunately >< Big pieces take forever lol
